“If you were to place pins in a map to indicate the location of the music capitals of the United States, a prominent pin would mark the position of Austin, TX. Another would be placed in Newport, RI, more specifically at Fort Adams, the home of the Newport Folk Festival. This year the Texas music (and state) capital will be sending a delegation to the Rhode Island music capital in the form of the Wheeler Brothers.
The three Wheeler Brothers, singer-guitarist Nolan, bassist Tyler, and drummer Patrick, along with guitar player Danny Matthews and lap steel wizard A.J. Molyneaux started playing over at the Wheeler’s house back when they were still in high school. The brothers and Matthews headed off to college at LSU, leaving Molyneaux behind to defend the state’s honor at the University of Texas.
The band kept making music while they were in Baton Rouge, but it wasn’t until they returned to Austin and Molyneaux jumped back on board that things really got going. Since then they’ve won five Austin Music Awards and sold out every show they’ve played in their hometown.
The Wheeler Brothers released their first album, Portraits, in 2011. It was the sound of a young band respecting the tradition established by Texas fore bearers like Townes Van Zandt and Willie Nelson, while stepping out on the edge with vanguard artists like Radiohead and Wilco. The new Wheeler Brothers album, Gold Boots Glitter, will be released on April 2.
‘For us it’s just about writing great music, playing killer shows and staying in touch with our fans,’ Nolan Wheeler said.
Welcome to Newport gentlemen.”
