“As the traditional boundaries of folk music continue to expand (or rather, dissolve), it seems the only reigning quality within the genre is diversity, and acceptance thereof. That being said, there’s truly no better way to celebrate such a notion than by welcoming acclaimed singer-songwriter Beth Orton to the 2013 Newport Folk Festival lineup.
Originally praised for her blend of electronic and folk music, Orton’s early work led her to collaborations both with producer William Orbit and the Chemical Brothers. But despite a departure from complex electronica soundscapes, Orton has maintained an incredible sense of intricacy with her latest release, Sugaring Season. Through her assertive vocal performances, cradled by a seamless backdrop provided by some truly fantastic musicians (Marc Ribot on guitar, Eyvind Kang on viola, Sebastian Steinberg on bass and drummer Brian Blade), Orton consistently achieves an emotional expressiveness unlike any other. And through such eclectic manners!
It is this sense of complexity, both emotionally and sonically, that makes Orton such a natural addition to this year’s lineup. One look at her long and winding career, and it’s clear that Orton belongs on the seaside stages at Fort Adams State Park.”
